Cape York Peninsula
Cape York Peninsula extends to the north from the Australian state of Queensland. Cape York, at the tip of the peninsula, is the northernmost point of mainland Australia.
Much of the Cape is unpopulated, but it does include settlements at Cairns, Port Douglas and Weipa. The Cape York Peninsula is known for high temperatures; in summer, it is not uncommon for the temperature in Cairns to reach 40 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). The rough four wheel drive track going all the way to the Tip (as Cape York itself is known) is Telegraph Road.
