Doug Ault

Douglas Reagan Ault (born March 9, 1950) is a former Major League Baseball first baseman who played for the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays from 1976-79.

A varsity baseball star at Texas Tech University, Ault was signed by the Rangers in 1976 as an amateur free agent and played nine games in his first season. In 1977 he joined the new Blue Jays franchise through the expansion draft and earned a spot in team history when he hit two home runs in the team's first game, including one in the first inning. At the time, Ault's feat tied a major league record for the most home runs in an Opening Day game. After that, George Bell (also a Blue Jay) became the first player to hit three homers on 1988 opening day, being matched by Cubs Tuffy Rhodes in 1994.

Ault was a career .236 hitter with 17 home runs and 86 RBI in 129 games.

Fact

• Notably, Doug Ault was one of the rare non-pitchers who threw left-handed but batted right-handed. Other such players include future Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson and Chucho Ramos.
