Durham Tees Valley Airport
Durham Tees Valley Airport is located six miles east of Darlington, in North East England. It is one of the UK's smaller airports and is mainly used for chartered flights, although there are a growing number of scheduled flights available. The airport is owned by a consortium of local authorities and Peel Holdings PLC.
Previously called Teesside International Airport, it was renamed Durham Tees Valley Airport on 21st September 2004 as part of a redevelopment plan.
Previously, Durham Tees Valley was a RAF base, RAF Middleton-St-George which at one time housed Lancaster bombers. In 1963, the airfield was closed and sold to Cleveland County Council who developed the site into a commercial airport. Queen Margaritha of Sweden opened the international passenger terminal in 1966. The airport has since been developed as a regional airport for the North East of England, and has expanded successfuly ever since.
