Ishida Mitsunari

Ishida Mitsunari (石田三成 Ishida Mitsunari 1560-1600) was a samurai who led the West side in the Battle of Sekigahara.

Born in what is now Shiga prefecture, he had served Toyotomi Hideyoshi since he was very young. He was known for his knowledge and skill at calculation. After he was defeated, he sought to escape but was caught by villagers as he passed their town. His punishment was a brutal decapitation with a blunt wooden saw.

The story of James Clavell's novel Shogun is based on the strife between Ishida (Ishido, in the novel) and Tokugawa (Toranaga).
