Up until 1930, 'Light bomber' planes were given the designation LB-. At that time the LB- designation was dropped, and the LB-14 was renamed the B-5. The three LB-14s produced for the US Army were re-engined and redesignated Y1B-5s. The design and performance of the Y1B-5 was very similar to the B-3A (LB-10), the only significant difference being the engine. (The Y1B- designation indicates that funds came from outside normal annual funds.)

In 1930, twenty-seven B-3As were convereted to the B-5A design. They provided the backbone of the U.S. bomber force from 1930 to 1934.
