Kortelisy
Kortelisy is a village in Ukraine which was completely destroyed on September 23 1942 by Germany during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II. The entire population of 2,892 was killed.
The village has since been rebuilt.
This was not an isolated incident. Many other villages were destroyed in a similar fashion by the Germans, e.g. Lidice in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), Oradour-sur-Glane in France and Sant'Anna di Stazzema and Marzabotto in Italy. Less well publicly known are reports that the German Army destroyed a total of 459 villages in the Ukraine, killing many or all of their residents.
