Kwun Tong (MTR)

The Kwun Tong Line is one of the six lines of the MTR network in Hong Kong.

It starts in Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon West and ends at Tiu Keng Leng in Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung.

History

Construction of the Kwun Tong Line was approved in November of 1975, and four years later, on 1 October 1979 service commenced on the Kwun Tong Line. Initially, service was only from Shek Kip Mei station to Kwun Tong station and each train only consisted of four cars. The initial system proved immensly popular, and on 31 December 1979 the system was extended to Tsim Sha Tsui station.

A year after on 12 December 1980 the first harbour crossing was made by an MTR train as the Kwun Tong Line was exntended even further to Chater station, present-day Central station. To deal with overcrowding, trains were also extended to six cars.

The Tsuen Wan Line started service in May 1982 and took over the section of the Kwun Tong Line from Chater to Argyle, present-day Mong Kok station. Thus, Waterloo (Yau Ma Tei station) became the terminus of the Kwun Tong Line and both Argyle and Prince Edward stations became interchange stations.

The Hong Kong government decided to build a second harbour crossing in 1984, which would be known as the Eastern Harbour Crossing. It awarded a franchise for the construction of a mixed rail and road tunnel under the harbour. When the Eastern Harbour Crossing was completed on 6 August 1989, the Kwun Tong Line was extended to Quarry Bay station, and on 1 October of the same year, Lam Tin station was opened.

After over 10 years, in 2001 the Kwun Tong Line was extended on 27 September to North Point station, On 4 August 2002, Yau Tong station was completed, and on 18 August the Tseung Kwan O Line opened, taking over the Eastern Harbour Crossing. Thus Tiu Keng Leng station became the terminus of the Kwun Tong Line.
