It includes true mice and rats and many other relatives. They occupy a vast variety of habitats on every continent except Antarctica. The Murids are classified in 17 subfamilies, around 260 genera and at least 1150 species.

  • Arvicolinae (voles, lemmings and muskrat; often included in Cricetinae)
  • Calomyscinae (Asian hamster mice)
  • Cricetinae (voles and hamsters)
  • Cricetomyinae (pouched rats and mice)
  • Dendromurinae (African climbing mice, gerbil mice, fat mice and forest mice)
  • Gerbillinae (gerbils, jirds and sand rats)
  • Lophiomyinae (crested rat)
  • Murinae (Old World rats and mice)
  • Myospalacinae (zokors)
  • Mystromyinae (white tailed rat)
  • Nesomyinae (Malagasy rats and mice)
  • Otomyinae (vlei rats, karoo rats and whistling rats)
  • Petromyscinae (rock mice and the climbing swamp mouse)
  • Platacanthomyinae (blind tree mouse and Malabar spiny mouse)
  • Rhizomyinae (bamboo rats and African mole rats)
  • Sigmodontinae (New World rats and mice)
  • Spalacinae (blind mole rats)
