Pirogue

A pirogue is a canoe which was traditionally made by hollowing out a tree trunk.

The word was derived from the spanish word piragua.

Dugout Canoes were one of the types of canoes used by American Indians, as well as in many other areas of the world. These days, the word pirogue does not have to refer to a dugout or even a boat similar to a dugout. Instead, it refers to a specific type of canoe, as can be seen by this link to www.pirogue.com (http://www.pirogue.com) link to a manufacturer of pirogues, where the advertised materials are fiberglass, cypress, and foam for flotation, the same materials that are used in many other modern canoes. This site for boat plans (http://www.unclejohns.com/boat/default.htm) site offers a boat which seems to match the others in style, although not materials since it is designed to be homebuilt. http://www.southernpaddler.com/ (http://www.southernpaddler.com/) has a forum you can discuss canoes and other paddling efforts, including pirogues. They look at pirogues as a specific type of canoe.
