A ram was also a naval ship class in the sixties years of the 19th century. Itse principal weapon was its own bow. The bow of the ram was hardened and reinforced to break the hull of an enemy ship. Rams were especially used during the American Civil War. They were often ironclads.

Ram or mast-ram is a system which controls the bend of a modern dinghy mast. The ram pushes the mast fore or aft to increase or decrease the bend of the mast at deck level -As a result the mainsail is either deepened or flattened increasing or decreasing the wind-generated power.

As a side effect the leech of the mainsail is either twisted or tensionned giving more or less pointing ability to the boat into the wind.
