Razia Sultan

Given name Razia al-Din. She succeeded her father Altamash to the Sultanate of Delhi in 1236. The idea of a female ruler so outraged the city's nobles that they had her brother Rukn al-Din crowned in her place. His ineffective reign lasted six months before the citizens rebelled and Razia was instated. She was the only woman to have ruled Delhi, albeit for four years. Following a revolt by the city's nobles she was killed and is buried in present day 'Old Delhi', next to her sister Saziya.
