He was one of the first actors considered for the role of James Bond in the early 1960s but his commitments to The Saint and later The Persuaders prevented him from taking the role until 1972, when he finally took the role and appeared in the Bond movies Live and Let Die (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Moonraker (1979), For Your Eyes Only (1981), Octopussy (1983) and A View to a Kill (1985), making him the longest continually-serving James Bond actor to date with twelve years and seven films under his belt.
