Romanian legislative election, 2004

The Romanian legislative election of 2004 will be held on November 28, 2004. The competition is held for 136 senator seats and 314 deputy seats.

The 2004 legislative election is held simultaneously with the presidential election. According to the 2003 amendment to the Romanian Constitution, the presidential term is now five years instead of four, meaning that in the future, legislative and presidential elections will be held separately.

Contenders

The main candidates are the left-wing alliance made up of the incumbent PSD and the Humanist Party of Romania (PUR), and, on the other hand, the center-right "D.A." alliance (Dreptate şi adevăr -- Justice and Truth) between the liberal PNL and the reformist social-democrat PD.

Other significant candidates are the Greater Romania Party (right-wing nationalists), the ethnic Hungarian party UDMR, and the Union for Romanian Reconstruction, a group of right-wing technocrats.

Projections

As of mid November 2004, the standings are as follows:

  • PSD+PUR: 41 %
  • PNL+PD: 34%
  • PRM: 13%
  • UDMR: 5%
