Template talk:Mapquest

Current Format, last updated by: Allyunion 14:34, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

{{mapquest|address=|city=|state=|zip=|country=|text=}}

Note: city, state, and country are required fields.
Additional note: Zip code can replace city and state; however it seems to work best under US cities. The default for country is US.
Reminder: Cross-streets do in fact work. Entering something like "Hollywood and Vine" in the city of "Hollywood" in "CA" of the "US" will produce a search to an address.

Country Codes

See ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 for the two-digit country codes which should be used in this template.

Updated the tests. -- Allyunion 14:34, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Trying zipcode only instead of city, and state...

Discussion

Some reorganization has been done for this page. all Tests have been moved to the top of the page. - Allyunion 14:10, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Initial Tests

Testing...

Okay... Got this to work for US places. I don't know how other countries will work for this.

Format is: {{Mapquest|Street Number and Street Name|City Name|State Abbr.|US}}

How Mapquest Links Work

How to link to MapQuest maps (http://www.mapquest.com/solutions/product.adp?page=linkfree)

Current Discussion

Added parameters to make it clear what is needed. Only city and state (or city and country) is required, the others are optional, as far as MapQuest is concerned. All the parameters need to be included when placing the template, but can be left blank (like "zip=|country="in the example below). Here is the new formatting, this line can be copied into articles, and then updated:

{{mapquest|city=REQUIRED|state=REQUIRED|address=|zip=|country=REQUIRED}}

Try something more exciting by specifying some of the optional choices...
which produces a set of choices. Not perfect but good enough for jazz. --Phil | Talk 17:08, Aug 23, 2004 (UTC)

Notes about testing templates

Just so you know, there's a limit of 5 uses of the same template on one page, which is why these are not working. - 13:50, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC) Lee (talk)
Thanks for letting me know. - Allyunion 13:58, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Format should be better

Gee, Netoholic, you couldn't make it even more complex? I've attempted to simply it as: {{mapquest|city|state|addres|zip|country}}

Although, I think that {{mapquest|city|state|addres|zip|country|addresstext}} would be nicer looking... - Allyunion 13:58, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

    • No no, it's really quite simple. Your version may look simeple, but its easy to messup the order and limits whate we can do. Variables are FAR better. I removed "addresstext". It's redundant since we can just use the city/state/etc. variables twice. Revert to my last version and take a look at the tests above. It was working really nicely! -- Netoholic (Talk) 14:01, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • The reason for "addresstext" now "text" is to specifically name the locations. Just like how we can link things with a specific name, "text" is trying to achieve the same thing. See my above examples. Allyunion 14:23, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Reorganization

Okay... with all the constant changes going on, I'm reorganizating this discussion page. - Allyunion 14:10, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Notes about usage

Netoholic, it's actually [(city AND state) OR zip code] AND country. At least, that works for US places. You can give a zip code in replace of a city and state, but country is a required field on all levels. - Allyunion 08:10, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

However, according to Mapquest, city and state is supposely sufficient enough... no country is required. - Allyunion 08:12, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Okay... Default for country is US. Country is required IF non-US city. - Allyunion 08:16, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
