The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll
"The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" is the title of a ballad by Bob Dylan.
Recorded on 23 October 1963, the song was released on Dylan's 1964 album entitled "The Times They Are A-Changin'". It was re-released in 1985 on the compilation album "Biograph". Live renditions of the song by its author can be found on the albums "Live 1975" (2002) and "Live 1964" (2004).
The ballad relates the tale of the careless murder of the eponymous Hattie Carroll, a 51-year-old serving woman, at the hands of William Zanzinger, a wealthy young man. Carroll's killer is only minimally presecuted as a result of his privileged position.
Although not explicitly stated in the song, it is implied that Carroll is black and Zanzinger white.
