Toronto Zoo
The Toronto Zoo is a zoo located in the northeastern part of Toronto, Ontario. It is accessible from Highway 401 located 2 km south of the zoo. It opened in 1974 as the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo and is owned by the City of Toronto. The zoo is located near the Rouge Valley Park and Rouge River.
It encompasses 3 km² (710 acres) and is divided into zoogeographic regions. The zoo includes four major tropical indoor pavilions and numerous outdoor exhibits. The zoo is home to over 5,000 animals representing over 450 distinct species.
Splash Island, the zoo's waterpark, opened in 2001.
