Transformers: The Movie
Transformers: The Movie is a 1986 feature film version of the popular television series Transformers based on the line of toys by Hasbro. It was directed by Nelson Shin and featuring the voices of Judd Nelson, Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Idle, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack and Frank Welker, among others.
The plot of the movie concerns the Transformers' battle with the gigantic planet-destroying robot Unicron.
During the course of the movie, many of the classic Transformers were killed or recreated (allowing Hasbro to launch a new line of Transformers toys). The Decepticon leader Megatron, for instance, was left for dead and rebuilt by Unicron as a new robot called Galvatron. Transformers: The Movie marks an epoch in the history of the franchise, and began a series of storyline patterns that persist in the present day's Transformers toys and media.
The Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, was killed due to injuries sustained in a battle with Megatron. He passed on his leadership duties to Ultra Magnus. Magnus was unfit to lead, as the matrix of leadership was taken from him by Galvatron. Hot Rod later recovered the matrix, and used its power to destroy Unicron, while at the same time becoming Rodimus Prime.

Because the Unicron reformatting sequence was shot in monochrome, there is widespread uncertainty over which Decepticons became Cyclonus and Scourge. Many fans seem to believe that it was Thundercracker that became Scourge and Bombshell or Shrapnel that became Cyclonus. Others believe it was Skywarp or Thundercracker that became Cyclonus and the former Insecticons that became Scourge and the Sweeps. To add to the confusion, during the hazy reformatting sequence, there are two Cyclonus robots seen and a reference by Unicron to Cylonus and his armada. After this, however, only the one Cyclonus was ever seen. Fans speculate that originally, it was planned to have Cyclonus as the leader of his own fleet of clones like Scourge and his Sweeps. To this day, the uncertainty remains.
