Gulistan Treaty

Gulistan Peace Treaty of 1813, a peace treaty between imperial Russia and Persia, signed on October 24 (November 5) in a village of Gulistan in Karabakh at the end of the Russo-Persian War of 1804-1813.

According to this treaty, Persia recognized Russia's authority over Dagestan, Georgia, Megrelia, Imeretia, Guria, Abkhazia and khanates of Baku, Karabakh, Gyandzha, Shirvan, Shekin, Derbent, and Talysh. Russia was granted an exclusive right to station its military fleet in the Caspian Sea. Both countries agreed on the establishment of free trade.

Some historians believe that Russia's annexation of the Transcaucasus territories delivered their population from constant murderous Turkish and Persian invasions and led to peace and relative economic stability. Others think that the peoples of Transcaucases were deprived of their right for self-determination and forcefully integrated with the Russian Empire.
