XGA

   

XGA, the Extended Graphics Array is an IBM display standard introduced in 1990.

XGA supports a resolution of 1024×768 pixels with a palette of 256 colours, or 640×480 with high colour (16 bits per pixel, or 65,536 colors). XGA-2 added 1024×768 support for high colour and higher refresh rates, improved performance, and supports 1360×1024 in 16 colours. All these modes have a 4:3 aspect ratio rounded to 8 pixels.

XGA is much misunderstood. It is not a new and improved replacement for Super VGA, simply one particular subset of the broad range of capabilities covered under the Super VGA umbrella.

XGA should not be confused with VESA's EVGA that was released at a similar time.
