XP-55 Ascender

   

A highly unusual design for its time, the Curtiss XP-55 Ascender was of the canard configuration, with a pusher prop and two vertical tails. Designed in response to an Army Air Corps request for "unconventional" designs, it had to be redesigned when the intended engine was cancelled. The first of four prototypes flew July 13, 1943, and were found to have acceptable performance, although they were somewhat unstable. The Ascender's performance never significantly exceeded that of conventional designs, was underpowered in terms of armament, and was subsequently cancelled without ever reaching production.
